Fern Mallis leaves IMG

Effective today Fern Mallis, Senior VP of IMG fashion is leaving to start her own company named Fern Mallis LLC. Although Mallis will no longer be working for IMG she’s not abandoning Fashion Week, her first client is IMG!

Mallis said, “I am ready to be starting my own company and look forward to advising and consulting on a wide variety of style, fashion, media and lifestyle programs, initiatives and branding strategies in the US and around the world,” Mallis said. “It’s time for me to participate in the exciting world outside ‘the tents’."

Just when I thought there may be an opening at IMG for me I learned that she will not be replaced, instead her work will be spread out throughout the company. Stephanie Winston Wolkoff has been named as the new fashion week Director. It will be exciting to see what fashion week will look like in September with the new director and location. Yep, I said it, new location! The show will now take place in Lincoln Center's Damrosch Park.

Michael Kors on 14-year-old Models

Michael Kors recently talked to the Montreal Gazette about model body size and age. He explained:

"Models, by nature, are not supposed to look like you and me. They are exemplary. They have bone structure and height and lengths of leg that normal people don't have. But you want that to be based on genes, and if they're adults, you want that to be based on adults who take care of themselves. I think if you send out an army of robotic 14-year-old children dressed up in their mom's clothes, I think the reality is that it's a turnoff, unless you are in fact a robotic 14-year-old. Women say: 'Well. wait a sec, I wear a bra. I have to go to the office. Where are clothes that I can actually wear?'"

In a sense I can understand where Kors is coming from. He knows that women over 35 (his biggest market) see the clothes on the models and wonder how it will look good on themselves when it looks so amazing on the model. What I can’t figure out is if he feels like this why doesn’t he use older and plus size models?

The video below is his Spring/Summer 2010 show

Who Wore It Worse?

It looks as if Christina Aguilera is trying to let her inner Lady Gaga out. Aguilera is rocking a latex outfit very similar to the one worn by Lady Gaga in London last August. My question to you today is who wore it worse?

I personally feel like the first movie was the perfect way to bring us up to speed on everyone’s life and maaaybe they should have left it there. I know me so I’m going to want more and more and more! Maybe they should just bring the series back. I hope all of you enjoy the movie. In case you’re worried about what to wear, I will be posting some easy to create options for you! You definitely want to be fabulous for this movie. Sachika: The Real Twins of NYC

I caught up with twin Designers To-Tam and To-Nya Ton-Nu of Sachika to get the scoop on what's been going on in their world. The beauties were born in Paris but grew up in Montreal and are now living, working, playing and being fabulous in New York City. Since launching “Sachika” in 2009 they’ve been going nonstop with commercials, magazine ads and even a new line!!!! Check out what they had to say about their career in fashion design.

How did you get into fashion design?
To-Nya always knew since she was little that she wanted to become a Fashion Designer. She designed her first dresses at the age of 9. She finished top of her program at the International Academy of Design.
To-Tam studied Communication and Journalism. She was always great in business & marketing. It was only natural for us to join forces for SACHIKA.

Where did the name SACHIKA come from?
When we were young, a friend of our parents was studying Japanese and asked us if we knew how to say our names in Japanese (we are Vietnamese). He then said To-Nya is SACHIKA and To-Tam is TOKAIDO. We fell in love with name and sound SACHIKA and even more when we found out that it means more wishes, more happiness and more fortune.

Why did you decide to work together instead of creating your own individual lines?
We realized that we were blessed in this life to be born twins. Not only that, but everything we do together has always been more successful. We feel it’s our calling in this life. We are different but complementary to one another. To-Nya is the lefty, the artist, the creative brand. To-Tam is the righty; the business minded one, the more outspoken. "2 heads is better than 1" as they say and yes, we can testify! Together, we are stronger and we motivate each other on a daily basis.

What sets you apart from other designers?
We have values and messages we want to spread around the world. We believe in helping others and inspiring people around us. Therefore, we design with the same mentality. Everything is done out of love, passion and good will and we hope this transpires in our brand which we define it as the SACHIKA movement: It’s not just a clothing line, it’s a lifestyle!

I’ve seen celebrities such as LisaRaye McCoy in Sachika, how does it feel to see your designs in magazines?
It feels great and we feel so blessed to have come this far. To be able to do what you love everyday and to get recognition for it is GOLD! " We are living life like it's golden!" :)

What one piece of advice would you give to someone wanting to start a career in fashion?
Have plenty of money saved up or get investors right off the bat. Get ready to work night and day.

This question is for the men because they’re very curious. Are you two single?
Yes, for the first time in a long time, we are both single! There are so many funny stories along that aspect of our life. We need a TV show!

I’m almost certain I saw your “Melissa” Sachika dress on the cover of New York Times bestselling author E Lynn Harris’ new book “Mama Dearest” how did that happen?
We were asked to style a model for a photo shoot and told that it might be picked up for a book cover. A few months after the shoot we hear the book is doing phenomenal, and that our dress is on the hard cover and the book is a best-seller!! We never turn down an opportunity!

You just launched your TUX by Sachika collection, what’s the inspiration behind that?
TUX by SACHIKA is line of premium t-shirts for men. We know that most men love wearing t-shirts because they’re so comfortable and are essential in all men's wardrobe. We wanted to take that key piece to the next level. Our t-shirts can be worn at the office, out and about or at formal events. The design scheme is sophisticated and clean and minimalist. The seams and details are strategically placed to "enhance" the male torso: v-shape, wide shoulders, small waist and sexy neck. The name TUX came from TUXEDO...the first TUX t-shirt has seams running down the front to mimic the pleats of a tuxedo. We've had a great response since the launch; expect to see some big names of pro athletes rocking our t-shirts very soon! Guys, don't fall behind get your shirts now!

Where can we find more information on SACHIKA?
We are on all the major social networks.

You can buy our designs on www.sachika.com and www.tuxbysachika.com. For those in the NY area, you can call us at: 1.888.SACHIKA to make an appointment and come to our showroom located in midtown, NYC.

You two are in commercials, your clothes are in magazines, on celebrities and on the cover of books. What’s next?
Our store is coming up in a prime location in NYC; it will be an insane concept, a one of a kind "shop"! We will be showing during NY Fashion Week, few selective stores will be carrying SACHIKA and TUX by SACHIKA and....we have our own TV show coming up!

Rain, Rain, Go Away

Today I had the pleasure of sitting on a panel at a modeling agency with fashion photographers and a designer talking to new models about what to expect as they pursue a career in fashion. I talked to the girls about what I look for at casting calls and what to expect if selected. Overall I had lots of fun and the girls received lots of valuable information!

I decided on a casual look because I didn't want to be overdressed, and it rained off and on all day. In the picture I'm wearing wide leg jeans by New York and Company, a top by BCBG Max Azria and a jacket I got in NYC from Square One. I'm also carrying my vintage Gucci bag that I absolutely love! Oh, and in case you're wondering my polish is bizerk turq from Color Club.

Ready for the Weekend

Here's a fun easy look I created on a website. I love mixing colors and I think blue and yellow look great together. You don't have to have the color throughout your entire look. You can do like I did and add your color in an accent piece like the clutch! Don't forget to spray on a splash of your favorite fragrance, right now I'm loving the new Chloe'!

Umit Benan Light cotton single-breasted jacket, $975
Skinny Easy Love, $320

Celebrity Kids: Suri Cruise

Suri Cruise just turned 4 and already her parents have her dressed like a teenager. Sure, she's a really pretty little girl but the heels, over sized earrings, adult purse and dark lip gloss are a bit much. I think her parents need to tone her look down a lot but who am I to say that right? Its one thing to play dress up in the privacy of your own home but allowing your little girl to walk around the streets like this is just inappropriate. This picture was apparently taken in Spain last winter when Suri was only 3, she looks 7 or 8. That's my opinion, what do you all think?

Prom 2010: Ready or not, here it comes

Prom night. For some, knowing that it’s approaching is enough to have some jumping for joy. For others, simply hearing the phrase makes them want to run for the hills. Regardless of how you feel about it, prom is the second most important night of your senior year. Prom signifies the end of your high school career if you're a senior. Making this night one you won’t forget should be high on your priority list! How? Well, I asked a few of my facebook friends to give some advice on preparing for your special night. Feel free to comment on this post and share your own tips and stories. Below is their advice and mine, hope it helps!

Do pick a dress that flatters your body. There are a lot of boutiques that carry a wide selection of dress designs; surely there is something for you!

"Its ok if u find a dress that's too big for you, if you love it, take it in for alterations." Whitney H

"Do make sure you wear comfortable shoes." Stacey T

Do shop around, online is your best option. I saw the same dresses on several different sites for different prices. Prom is quickly approaching but if your prom is next month you still have time to order online.

If you have to buy locally, do go to a boutique that will register your dress to ensure no one at your prom will look like your twin. Rae Lynn's boutique in Greenwood, IN carries some of the designers pictured and WILL provide this service for you.

"Do get lots of rest the night before" Keonte W

Do remember to shave or wax your legs darling. You DO NOT want to be spotted looking like Willie Mammoth.

"Don't over accessorize" Shauna H

"Don't take a huge purse; you're not going to want to carry it all night." Alexis F

"Don't experiment with new hair colors a week before prom. You're going to be stuck with it regardless if you like it" Gerri M

Don't forget your camera!

I searched the internet to find fabulous dresses for everyone’s budget and body size, I hope you like them! While searching I noticed that the colorful printed gowns are really big this year and I LOVE THEM! Its spring ladies so if you can, wear a colorful dress. Yes, black slims you and if that’s your goal, by all means go for it! However, if you want to stand out and be noticed, wear some color darling. Long, short, fitted or flared it really doesn’t matter, find something that looks fabulous on you and enjoy your night!!!!!

Dress 1 is a beautiful keyhole dress from Terani. I saw this dress on several websites for several different prices. The lowest price I found was $179 at http://www.therosedress.com/ (pssst.... don't hold your arms like that in your prom pic)
Dress 2 is a gold x-neckline dress from David's Bridal prom line. It retails for $155 and can be found at http://www.davidsprom.com/
Dress 3 I would have to say is my absolute favorite and also the most expensive. The "Colorful Fiesta" dress has a sticker tag of $500 and can be purchased at http://www.jovani.com/
Dress 4 can be yours for the low price of $33 at http://www.forever21.com/
Dress 5 is a beautiful yellow dress from Jovani that I found at http://www.promgirl.com/ for $350. I noticed this dress on two other sites and the price was slightly higher.
